Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Gonzalez, owner of Salon Seed in Richmond TX.
Before we jump into specifics about your business, give us some details about you and your story.
I have been in the beauty industry for 14 years now, feels crazy to say, and have always loved having the ability to impact peoples lives. I did not know what I would do with my life right out of high school and one day my mother asked me the question that I share with all my young clients to this day, “What would you do for the rest of your life for free, and how can you make money with that?” I was not expecting that and figured I liked to play with makeup on my friends and myself so we decided that people had parties and weddings, and needed makeup, so I searched for a beauty school to refine my skills. What I didn’t know was that in Cosmetology I would be learning hair, nails, and skin! Turned out I enjoyed doing hair so much that I set out to be a hairdresser. Unfortunately, I could not find a salon that satisfied my desire to be surrounded by passionate and education seeking stylists so I turned back to makeup and worked for MAC Cosmetics for 5 years, a super passionate and super education driven company. But I wanted more, and I wanted to do hair professionally again. I finally found a salon that had the education focus in Sugar Land, and I apprenticed with a very talented local stylist who taught me so much of how I work today. After 9 years I was ready. See, what I do is more than just hair and makeup, I try to help you see yourself in your best light and do my best to bring out your best features all while giving a relaxing and fun experience. I decided to open Salon Seed as an opportunity to make this experience come full circle by paying attention to your needs and create an experience unique to you. I have chosen to work primarily with a product line called Davines for my color and styling products because they stand for the same things as I do when it comes to beauty, you must take care of your self from the inside to really shine from the outside. My focus is creating a look that can be maintained while keeping the health of your hair in top condition. I carry an ammonia free color, a traditional beautifully dimensional color, as well as a high shine treatment color that is made of 98% naturally derived ingredients. I am exited to bring my art and passion to Richmond, TX, and I look forward to becoming part of the community.
What are some of your obstacles or challenges as a local business owner?
I would find myself up against walls it seemed where my career would seem great but the work itself was not satisfying. I am a person who is fueled by passion so that was not a good position for me. I have a problem where I get bored easily, so now I am in full control of my surroundings, how to stay inspired, and who I work with.
Tell us about Salon Seed.
Salon Seed is a hair salon designed to feel comfortable and relaxing while providing top quality techniques and nourishing products. I specialize in custom color unique to each client, but I provide a wide range of services including extensions (hair and lashes), make up, and haircuts. This salon is unique due to the choices made for each client, it is not a one cut fits all place. Each experience is unique to each person from the services provided to the type of music, and the conversation. My job is to listen to your needs and ultimately ensure that you feel the best you have ever felt.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to your success?
I feel that humility has to be the most important characteristic to my success. I truly feel that there is so much more that I can learn in my profession and I constantly attend classes locally and around the country to stay on top of my game. It is not above me to ask for assistance from my fellow artist network, which ultimately leads to more growth.
